The moon of Blackburne was a fertile and productive rim world, settled early on and blessed with an excellent terraforming profile though very remote.  Farming was the main industry, with some mining of copper, zinc, and iron in the mountains providing some reason to bring in more sophisticated technologies.

Blackburne had been settled by fiercely individualistic people.  When the Independence movement against Alliance control began, Blackburne was among the first to join, enthusiastically contributing supplies and troops to the Browncoat cause.

The defeat of the Independents was brutally hard on many worlds; on Blackburne it was horrific.

Refusing surrender under any terms, the well armed and provisioned populace of Blackburne repelled attempt after attempt to subdue the moon by the Alliance.  The destruction of all orbital facilities, bombardment from space, waves of Alliance troopers, all were endured and fought off.  Eventually the persistent defiance caused the commander of the besieging forces to, perhaps, exceed his authority; striking the open plains and cities of Blackburne with ship launched nuclear missiles, much as had happened at the nearby world Shadow, where the Alliance destroyed all life on the moon.

On Blackburne millions died.  Cities turned into wrecks, fallout covering most of the world.  Some citizens retreated into underground vaults, some survived in the wilderness of the moon, the fortunate ones perished immediately in atomic fire.

Nothing was left for the Alliance; the ships left, unwilling to risk any more troops in the now-deadly environment of this moon.

Unlike at Shadow where there were no survivors at all, here some took refuge in a desert valley where there was a small supply of fresh water from deep underground reservoirs.  The ruins of a small town provided shelter, only the strongest buildings having survived the nuclear assault even in this valley.  Collecting food, rebuilding their wrecked lives, stockpiling weapons, and having never surrendered to the Alliance, the local humans prospered in the following years in spite of their hardships.

Now Blackburne is a small Downport for Free Traders who are interested in a place to hide out from Alliance officials and take their ease in a place where the locals cater to their needs.  Recreation being the main industry of Blackburne Downport there is also a small mining operation and local crafts to export for badly needed cash money.  Importing grains and basic protein to supplement their own garden grown foods and hunted meats, the residents of Blackburne Downport live a dangerous yet satisfying life today, free from the influence of the Alliance.

Reaver raiding parties are regularly defeated by the well armed residents, as well as incursions by mutated life from outside the valley.  The occasional Alliance investigator rarely return to report to their superiors, either.

War never changes.  And the people of Blackburne have still not surrendered.
